GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Vice President/Medical Director, Oncology Services for SSM Health - St. Louis is responsible for evaluating, developing and implementing service line growth initiatives and for ensuring effective and efficient operational processes within the oncology operations for the St. Louis region and will serve as the physician leader and subject matter expert for SSM Cancer Care St. Louis to optimize quality, growth, and performance in accordance with the Mission and Values of SSM Health. This includes communicating, directing, planning, organizing, and financial monitoring to facilitate the delivery of cost-effective, high quality health care services, in an ever changing and competitive health care environment.


The Vice President for Oncology Services will provide leadership and direction for assigned areas and will be seen as a senior leader both internally across the organization as well as in the community we serve. This position will partner with leaders throughout SSM Health to drive initiatives, programs and services to enable SSM Health to deliver on key initiatives. This is a visionary, proactive servant leader with the ability to obtain support and foster an organizational environment that encourages leaders to share leadership, ownership, responsibility, and accountability to accomplish the vision of the organization. Strong management skills and clinical expertise to identify opportunities to improve operating efficiency, growth, profitability, and compliance are required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to: President, SSM Health DePaul Hospital and Oncology Service Line Executive; President, SSM Health Medical Group

Supervises: Leaders and Physicians of Oncology Service Line

Interrelationships: Interacts with entity, regional and system personnel; entity presidents; other system local entity Presidents; hospital boards and other local groups; local and regional medical staff members; employees and a variety of other publics.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:


Mission, Values and Standards of Ethical Conduct

  • Demonstrates and imparts the mission, philosophy, values and vision of SSM Health Care in daily activities and into operational functions, processes and environment.
  • Works effectively as a team member in a dynamic executive environment where collegiality, subsidiary and sharing responsibility is required and highly valued within a matrix organization. Promotes teamwork within and across the network by maintaining positive and productive intra-entity and intradepartmental relationships and utilizing effective problem solving skills.

  • Adheres to the SSM Health Standards of Ethical Conduct, displaying, as applicable, ethical behavior in the areas of business ethics, legal compliance, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, vendor relationships and the reporting of questionable activities.

Customer Relations

  • Ensures premier customer satisfaction. Implements mechanisms and feedback processed to determine customer satisfaction levels.
  • Ensures engagement, satisfaction and alignment of employees, physicians and executives in order to realize effective implementation of strategic and operational plans within the oncology service line.
  • Creates an environment in which effective communication and responsiveness to customer needs are personal priorities. Provides timely resolution and response to customer complaints, concerns and suggestions.

Strategic Planning

  • Evaluates, develops in partnership with Business Strategy team and implements the strategic business plan for oncology services within SSM Health - St. Louis. Serves as the strategic business development advisor to hospital and service line leaders and physicians.
  • Collaborates with key leaders and departments to effectively operationalize strategic business plans for assigned operational areas within the region.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of the Strategic, Financial and Human Resource Planning process.
  • Translates system, regional, hospital and service line initiatives into action plans at the hospital and departmental level with appropriate performance measures.
  • Assumes fiscal responsibility through budgetary planning and implementation.

Performance Improvement

  • Incorporates CQI principles into daily activities focusing on process improvements, patient safety and premier patient satisfaction.
  • Participates in ongoing continuous quality improvement education and training.

Human Resources

  • Responsible for the oversight of effective human resource management for the assigned oncology departments and teams.
  • Ensures human resource policies are enforced and administered consistently without favoritism or discriminatory influence.
  • Utilizes timely and effective means of informing and updating staff on organizational, system-wide and industry issues. Provides opportunity for staff input and encourages staff feedback regarding improvement opportunities.
  • Facilitates an environment that promotes team building and collaboration. Motivates, encourages and empowers staff to achieve personal, team, departmental and organizational goals. Recognizes individual and team accomplishments.
  • Mentors leaders and management in career growth and actively cooperates in succession planning efforts at the System and regional level with special emphasis on retaining and recruiting a diverse work force.

Knowledge and Application of Policies and Regulatory/Accreditation Requirements

  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that address hospital and service line functions with review and revision as needed.
  • Maintains knowledge and achieves compliance with federal, state and local regulatory requirements, licensure, accreditation requirements, record procedures and internal controls.
Information Management
  • Develops and ensures compliance of confidentiality policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes information to support timely and effective decision-making processes.

Position Specific Accountabilities

  • Collaborates and partners with physicians, hospital executives and network executives to identify, create and implement effective business plans.
  • Utilizes multiple venues including but not limited to collaboration, joint ventures, contractual, employment and/or co-management arrangements to ensure strategic and operational plans are implemented and maintained.
  • Implements and ensures adherence to policy decisions of SSM Health.
  • Effectively communicates at all levels within the organization including but not limited to employees, physicians, Franciscan Sisters of Mary, advisory board members, Regional President Vice President/COO.
  • Develops and enhances relationships with community, other publics, organizations and groups that expand the effectiveness of the mission.
  • Participates in developing regional policies, procedures and directives as requested and communicates appropriately to ensure compliance is achieved.
  • Effectively collaborates with regional support functions of nursing, finance, planning, quality and human resources to achieve successful outcomes for the hospitals, service lines, network and system.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

-M.D. or D.O. from an accredited institution

-5+ years of experience as an accomplished senior healthcare executive within a large healthcare institution.

-Ability and desire to integrate CQI principles and tools into work processes.

-Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

-Understand the Mission and Values of SSM Health Care and Franciscan Sisters of Mary.
