Description

This position includes first assisting, rounding, and dedicated clinic time. Call would be about every 5th night and every fifth weekend. This is a Full Time Float position between five clinic sites in the St. Louis area.

Providing technical assistance under the direct supervision and direction of the operating surgeon; including intraoperative functions which may include, saphenous vein, radial artery, and endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting, radial arterial line placement; handling tissue; providing exposure using instruments, suturing and providing hemostasis. Performs duties and tasks only under the direct supervision of the primary surgeon and only within the scope of their practice and licensure. Direct supervision by the physician employer remains immediately

  • Determine specific equipment needed per procedure
  • Review permit to confirm procedure and special needs
  • Select and place of x-rays for reference
  • Assist in moving and positioning of patient
  • Insert and remove Foley urinary bladder catheter
  • Place pneumatic tourniquet
  • Confirm procedure with surgeon
  • Drape patient within surgeon's guidelines
  • Provide retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization with regard to tissue type and appropriate retraction instrument and/or technique
  • Assist in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, use and application of appropriate surgical instrument for the task, placement of ties, placement of suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents, or other measures as directed by the surgeon
  • Use electrocautery mono and bi-polar
  • Clamp, ligate, and cut tissue per surgeon's directive
  • Harvest saphenous vein, including skin incision, per surgeon's directive
  • Dissect common femoral artery and bifurcate per surgeon's directive
  • Maintain integrity of sterile field
  • Close all wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous and skin) as per surgeon's directive
  • Insert drainage tubes per surgeon's directive
  • Select and apply wound dressings
  • Assist with resuscitation of patient during cardiac arrest or other life-threatening events in the operating room
  • Perform any other duties or procedures incident to the surgical procedure deemed necessary and as directed by the surgeon

  • Performs comprehensive and problem-focused histories and physical examinations
  • Diagnoses and treats illnesses and injuries
  • Orders and interprets laboratory and radiographic studies
  • Educates and counsels patients
  • Performs minor surgical procedures
  • Performs First Assist duties in surgery
  • Assists with call
  • Renders emergency care
  • Facilitates patient referral to the appropriate physician or agency
  • Conducts research and drug studies
  • Prescribes medication in most states

Hospital Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs first assist duties
  • Assists with surgical procedures
  • Conducts daily hospital rounds
  • Write orders and progress notes
  • Performs admission history and physicals
  • Orders appropriate laboratory and radiographic tests

- Performs appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies

- Evaluates and clarifies clinical conditions

- Formulates and implements treatment and therapeutic plans for hospitalized patients

- Handles discharge planning and dictates discharge summaries

Office Duties & Responsibilities

- Sees new office patients and completes a thorough history and physical examination

- Presents the patient to attending surgeons, if needed

- Helps to formulate treatment plans

- Orders appropriate radiographic studies

- Performs office procedures

- Evaluates post-operative patients and does routine follow-up visits

- Is available to see patients requiring same-day office visits

- Returns phone calls of from patients

- Handles prescription refills

- Reviews radiographic reports and laboratory reports for abnormalities

- Evaluates, screens and counsels patients on health maintenance and promote utilization of community resources

- Designs, conducts and/or participates in research studies

- Manages databases

- Perform quality assurance


Qualifications

  • Missouri Physician Assistant Certified or Nurse Practitioner Graduate.

  • Will consider RNFA that is in a P.A or N.P. program

  • Candidates who have experience working with heart and vascular surgeons involving intraoperative functions which may include, saphenous vein, radial artery, and endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting, radial arterial line placement; handling tissue; providing exposure using instruments, suturing and providing hemostasis.
