Role Purpose:

Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner works in collaboration with team members and is accountable for providing and managing the outcomes in the delivery of palliative health care services to patient and families. Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner works across the care continuum that include: 1) individual and family 2) patient populations 3) interdisciplinary team 4) organization/system 5) health care system.

  • Provides expert clinical consultation and care regarding palliative care to patients, families, staff and community.
  • Functions as a member of a consultative interdisciplinary work team. Work with other patient care staff as a direct care provider or in a consultative role.
  • Consults with palliative care consultative service or designees and other physicians as needed; informs primary physician of services provided.
  • Develops, negotiates and advances the plan of care specific to palliative care and end of life issues.
  • Oversees palliative care management and facilitates appropriate and timely resources in the provision of palliative care to meet identified palliative care consultative service outcomes.
  • Provides training and continuing education for staff.
  • Assists in the development of practice guidelines/standards in support of quality palliative care.
  • Adheres to the practice of confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff and the organization.
  • Utilizes the nursing process to plan and coordinate interventions and evaluate care for patients and families through complex clinical reasoning and advanced synthesis of information, management of complex health care needs and coordination of the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Performs comprehensive physical evaluations, orders and interpret diagnostics and prescribes appropriate medications.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary research related to pediatric palliative medicine.


Prior experience/training in pediatric palliative medicine. Experience in coordinating care of complex patients with chronic illnesses. Experience caring for children with high symptom burden/complex conditions, requiring multiple consultative services. Excellent listening skills, interpersonal and communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate of a Master program for Nurse Practitioner
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Missouri.
  • National certification in palliative care preferred; required within 12- 18 months of hire
  • Two or more years of clinical experience in area hospice, geriatric, oncology and/or primary care
  • Must obtain Medical Staff privileges
  • Department Specific: Extensive professional working knowledge and clinical expertise in area of specialization. Incorporates knowledge of developmental states for patients, adults through geriatrics, as it pertains to specific patient populations. Has knowledge base regarding health care delivery systems and health care financing arrangements.

Employees in this position are, or can be, required to possess the following physical capabilities:

  • Lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling up to 50 lbs.
  • Stooping, kneeling and/or crouching daily
  • Standing or walking more than 4 hours a day
  • Running to respond to patient emergencies
  • Reaching, grasping, fingering, and/or feeling more than 6 hours a day
  • Visual acuity in order to correctly distinguish skin tone variations, evidence of IV infiltration, infection; able to read telemetry, blood pressure gauges, etc.
  • Audio acuity in order to correctly distinguish various body sounds (i.e., respirations, heart tones, bowel sounds).
  • Audio acuity to discern sounds made by various types of machinery or equipment that would indicate dangerous or improper operation
