The Chief Medical Officer / Vice President, Medical Affairs (CMO/VPMA) is the hospital executive physician leader for SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital and a member of the hospital executive team. The CMO/VPMA will lead in the development and implementation of a culture of patient safety and physician satisfaction, while ensuring effective standards and guidelines for quality patient care. The CMO/VPMA manages and supports the ongoing functions of the medical staff, provides ongoing medical staff development, provides leadership in the areas of effective utilization review, case management, medical staff regulatory compliance and medical informatics, as well as serves as a liaison to the network teams. The ideal candidate will have a passion for quality with a proven record of continuous quality improvement. This role will lead and foster the collaboration efforts between Saint Louis University and SSM Health-St. Louis. In addition, the ideal candidate shall manifest behaviors which exemplify the spirit of the Saint Louis University and SSM Health mission and values while acting within the parameters of the Bylaws of the Corporation and established policies and procedures. Serves as a visionary, proactive servant leader with the ability to obtain support and foster an organizational environment that encourages others to share leadership, ownership, responsibility and accountability to accomplish the vision of the organization. Strong leadership skills to help identify opportunities for improved operating efficiency, growth, profitability and compliance are required.


  • M.D. or D.O. from an accredited institution
  • Experience in an academic setting within a multi-state integrated delivery network
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must be well organized, flexible, resourceful, and efficient while maintaining a high level of professionalism and confidentiality
  • Ability and desire to integrate CQI/Lean principles and tools into work processes
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to follow through on initiatives
  • Strong Analytical skills with good project management skills
  • Skill in Microsoft Office suite of applications
  • Knowledge of structures, systems and services of SSM Health
  • Knowledge of medical informatics and electronic health records
  • Ability to support 24-hour administrative call requirements
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining relationships with internal and external contacts
  • Superior leadership skills, particularly in cultivating a high-performance leadership team and in developing and maintaining excellent partnerships with physicians and staff
  • Must listen actively and accurately, encouraging input from others; provides clear directions
  • Experience in managing change initiatives
  • A high sense of urgency and experience operating effectively in a fast-paced environment requiring the skill to handle multiple priorities simultaneously
  • The ability to set and maintain high standards of performance in a collegial environment, holding people accountable for achieving deliverable metrics and in doing so, one who encourages open dialogue and delegates authority and accountability comfortably
  • Respect for and understanding of mission-driven institutions
  • Ability to work collaboratively with physician leaders in an academic environment
  • A results-oriented individual with a reputation of doing what it takes to get the job done while ensuring strong interpersonal relationships; an individual of highest personal and professional integrity, principal and knowledge, earning respect and support when making difficult decisions and choices
